Projects

I'm not the best at completing reading assignments-- that's probably where I lost the most points this semester, when teachers held me accountable for that. But I can bust out a decent essay, and I can rock a creative project. (Case in point: in 11th grade we had to do a final project for my english class, and I wrote and recorded a soundtrack to Catcher in the Rye. I got 100%. It was awesome).

On Sunday night I finished up my project for my "Family Life in World Religions" class. The assignment was to make a religious object for our homes. Because I love anything that is associated with sleeping and snuggling, I made a quilt, and made the design to loosely represent the Plan of Salvation (Picture above: the green is representative of the Garden of Eden, black is the veil/earth life, the lighter section is the Celestial Kingdom-- it's all kind of flowing together to represent the continuity of it all-- we can have heaven in our homes now, etc).

For my American Folklore class I've been collecting covers of lullabies from different musicians I know, specifically lullabies that had been sung to them as children. These lullabies are posted here for you to enjoy.

Unrelated to school, I recorded "I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day" with my friend Ethan Jacobsen the other day, and you can listen to it (and download it!) here. OR here!

I'm also working on another music project with another friend. I don't have much to share about it right now, but we've started recording, and I'm pretty stoked about it.

Anyway, those are some of the things that make me excited. I hope you got something out of this, too!

Friday Night

On Friday night I played a little garden show at Alicia's house. It was so nice to play again- it was the first time playing a solo show in years-- there was Foreign Loren from 2007-2008, a couple open mics in 2010, playing with Cartoon Bar Fight a couple times earlier in 2012... but I can't remember the last time that I played an entire set solo. My dear friend Kylie also joined me on violin for a couple of songs. It was a wonderful evening. I think Alicia got some video, so I'll hopefully be posting some of that up here for you, too.

Before I headed home, Alicia gave me that beautiful print, "You are so loved." It now resides on my dresser beside the vintage lamp from my Great Grandma Mary. There is a lot of love in that little space of my bedroom, and I am so grateful.

Creativity

One of my favorite artists, Sandra Juto, created this installation in a Swedish preschool. Isn't it fantastic? Maybe it's because I was raised by two very educationally-aware parents (my father is a head honcho at a local college, my mother is a preschool teacher), but I have a special place in my heart for creative learning environments.

Speaking of, remember when I recorded that little collection of lullabies? Use code "apple20" to get 20% off the digital download.

Is this real life?

I am so happy. I feel like I'm living a miniature version of where I want to be someday.

I've been collaborating with my friend Reif, even across a 3 hour time difference (which makes Skyping kind of interesting). There's a lot of emailing scrap demos to each other, and emailing other ones back with little things added in, etc. It's way fun. I wanted to document our jam session the other day, but didn't want to accidentally exit out of skype by trying to take a screen shot (trust me, I would), so I took a lousy instagram photo instead. But you get the idea. I love this.

Next week I'm headed up to San Jose to join my friends' band Cartoon Bar Fight for a couple gigs as a backing vocalist. We go way back-- I used to play in a keyboard pop band and other various music ventures with my friend Kendall, who founded CBF with her boy Dirk. I've played a few shows with them over the years I guess, and it's always so much fun. Right now I'm working on learning some of their new songs, and brushing up on the older ones.

(me, kendall, dirk, house show, may 2008)
Everything I am doing right now is my future dream job (just on a larger scale, and with monetary reimbursement, etc). I want to collaborate, I want to be a guest vocalist on projects, add my own thing to other people's stuff, work as a songwriter for other people. I don't want to front a band. I've done that before. I just want to mingle around in other people's stuff. Let them take the front, but be a part of the creative process there.

And if not, I'll at least have a degree in family science and experience in teaching preschool and such.

But if I can be a musician professionally? I can't even imagine. Incredible.

Easy Card Tutorial

Notes:

  • On my printer, the card went in the right side of the paper tray, but I'm not sure if other printers are different. I recommend testing on a regular piece of paper first before you put your cards in.
  • The cards I used were purchased at my local craft store-- it's a brand that sells 40 blank cards for about $10. It's a pretty sweet deal, and the base designs themselves are beautiful. I usually use them plain, just for little notes to people, but this is an easy way to add a personalized touch to the card without causing your craft room to explode with scrapbooking supplies.

Ouma Clothing / Lindsay Ann Photography

From Lindsay Ann Photography,
Found on Grey Likes Weddings.

(I think the male model looks like a cross between Christian Bale
and this guy from my English class last year, who I thought was
really good looking, but wasn't at all attracted to him in any other way.
If only.)

She's Got The Magic: Pacing The Panic Room

This woman has got an awesome sense of humor. Her husband documented her pregnancy weekly on his really great blog, then made this stop action movie of it a year later. So fun! I love it! Enjoy!

A Letter from John Keats. (Feel free to swoon).

March 1820
Sweetest Fanny-

You fear, sometimes, I do not love you so much as you wish? My dear Girl I love you ever and ever and without reserve. The more I have known you the more have I lov'd. In every way - even my jealousies have been agonies of Love, in the hottest fit I ever had I would have died for you. I have vex'd you too much. But for Love! Can I help it? You are always new. The last of your kisses was ever the sweetest; the last smile the brightest; the last movement the gracefullest. When you pass'd my window home yesterday, I was fill'd with as much admiration as if I had then seen you for the first time. You uttered half complaint once that I only lov'd your Beauty. Have I nothing else then to love in you but that? Do not I see a heart naturally furnish'd with wings imprison itself with me? No ill prospect has been able to turn your thoughts a moment from me. This perhaps should be as much a subject of sorrow as of joy - but I will not talk of that. Even if you did not love me I could not help an entire devotion to you: how much more deeply then must I feel for you knowing you love me. My Mind has been the most discontented and restless one that ever was put into a body too small for it. I never felt my Mind repose upon anything with complete and undistracted enjoyment - upon no person but you. When you are in the room my thoughts never fly out of window: you always concentrate my whole senses. The anxiety shown about our Loves in your last note is an immense pleasure to me: however you must not suffer such speculations to molest you any more: nor will I any more believe you can have the least pique against me. Brown is gone out - but here is Mrs Wylie - when she is gone I shall be awake for you. - Remembrances to your Mother.
Your affectionate
J. Keats

More posted on the We Are Women blog here.

I also took some pictures of statues of muses, but they remind me of the Doctor Who episodes concerning the weeping angel statues, which freaks me out. Sorry. I guess that means you'll just have to go to the Getty Villa yourself to see them!

I love this print by Sandra Juto-- and I am so, so tempted to finally purchase it now that it's on sale. That's right, folks. Buy one print and get one free. Luckily the sale goes until July 16, because it's going to take me a few days to narrow down my options. Check out Sandra's wonderful blog here!

BYU, I have never been prouder.

BYU advertising students rocked it.
